Eight lucky Australian travel agents recently joined Rebecca George, ANZ Trade Manager for Travel Portland, on a jam-packed famil to experience Portland and its nearby regions firsthand.
Touching down at the newly expanded and architecturally stunning PDX Airport (with final upgrades due by 2026), the six-day itinerary gave agents a real feel for the city’s personality. From its creative maker culture and buzzing neighbourhoods to its eclectic food, music, and arts scenes – Portland left a big impression.
Over the week, the group:
Sampled the city’s legendary food carts and buzzing local eateries
Visited iconic sights like Powell’s Books – the world’s largest bookstore
Soaked up the match-day energy at a Portland Timbers soccer game (chainsaws and all!) – hero pic
Of course, no trip would be complete without a taste of what’s nearby. The group ventured beyond the city to explore the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood’s alpine playground, and the boutique wineries of Tualatin Valley – all within easy reach of Portland.
Accommodation was split between two standout stays: Cascada, a new boutique hotel and urban oasis in the Alberta Arts District featuring a luxe thermal spa; and The Sentinel, a heritage-listed downtown hotel full of charm and history.
We walked away not only with fantastic memories – but also a clear understanding of why Portland is such an appealing and easy-to-sell destination for Aussie travellers.
Hear are a couple of comments from our agents after they returned home:
“Portland is like a patchwork quilt stitched with forest trails, food trucks, funky art, and kindness — warm, colourful, and full of character. It’s quirky in the best way and feels like home from day one. Your clients won’t want to leave. Cue the chorus of ‘just one more day! Luke Wtts, TravelManagers
“Portland is the secret gem on the West Coast. It’s southern neighbours get all the attention but it simply can’t be overlooked. There’s something for everyone and essential for foodies, nature lovers and year round sports fans, “ Sam Stratten, Flight Centre
