From the projected completion of both the Portland International Airport and Portland Art Museum renovations to the opening of the city’s first eco-hotel (CASCADA), James Beard Public Market, Literary Arts HQ, Wine Spa, and more, Portland is set to welcome travelers with open arms in 2025. Please find more details below:
- James Beard Public Market: With phase one projected to open Fall 2025, James Beard Public Market will invigorate downtown Portland and catalyze future food cultures in an indoor/outdoor venue open seven days a week. The market will offer a unique and authentic experience with its diverse array of vendors featuring fresh produce, local dairy products, artisan cheese, local fish, meats and game, fresh flowers, herbs, and value-added food products—as well as coffee, beer, wine and distilled spirits. Open year-round, the venue will be occupied by locally owned vendors selling their locally grown produce and food products with the express objective of encouraging healthy eating for people of all cultural and economic backgrounds. Some vendors will be well-established, household names, while others will be emerging ventures supported by the market’s food entrepreneurship programs with a priority on disadvantaged communities. As a market for all, customers from all income levels, from every ethnic group and from every part of the region will find top quality foods sold by these locally owned small businesses.
- Airport Revitalization: Phase one of the Portland International Airport (PDX) remodel was completed August 2024 with the unveiling of the new main terminal. The $2 billion project features nature-infused interiors including a gorgeous giant wood ceiling (don’t forget to look up!) built using timber harvested from the sovereign lands of four Oregon and Washington tribes, 72 mature trees (5,000 live plants in total) planted throughout the terminal, and a biophilic design aimed at lowering traveler’s stress, blood pressure, and heart rate. The new terminal offers an urban feel reminiscent of Portland’s many neighborhoods both pre- and post- security with 24 local shops and restaurants, over 60% of which are partially or fully owned by women and/or people of color. Concessions include beloved Portland spots like independently-owned book store Powell’s Books, leather artisan Orox Leather Co., fast casual pasta spot Grassa, and more (full list available here). The airport is complete with the return of the iconic PDX carpet and a more efficient experience through new TSA security stations, check-in areas, and more. The full project will be completed December 2025 or early 2026. More details can be found here.
- Arts & Culture: An $111M expansion and renovation project will add nearly 100,000 square feet to the Portland Art Museum. Set to debut in late 2025, the changes will connect the Museum’s historic buildings, creating new galleries to display more of its expansive collection in a newly build Mark Rothko Pavilion, and increasing accessibility throughout the campus. In late 2024, Portland’s non-profit literary organization Literary Arts will also debut a brand-new Literary Arts HQ, a 14,000-square-foot event space that will host community events and further represent the city’s rich literary legacy.
- New Eco-Hotel: Opening late 2024, CASCADA will be Portland’s first underground thermal springs spa and hotel. The immersive wellness sanctuary is built to be as healthy for humans as it is sustainable for the earth. A true urban oasis in the heart of the Alberta Arts District, CASCADA offers a holistic approach to wellness that integrates spa treatments and thermal therapy, nourishing cuisine, and tranquil hotel rooms and suites for a rejuvenating stay.
- Portland’s First Wine Spa: Opened November 19, 2024, The Wine Spa will be Portland’s first and only wine spa. This eight treatment room facility is inspired by the owner’s travels to the wine spas of Eastern Europe, bringing vinotherapy treatments of the old world into the modern era by combining their love of local Willamette Valley wines with modern science and wellness. Here, wine isn’t just for sipping, it’s also a star ingredient utilizing wine in vinotherapy baths, massages, facials and more.
- Outdoor Recreation: Biking is up 5% according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, which is no surprise as the vast path network is continuously growing to feature new paved, well-lit and multi-use trails. Visitors can explore the city’s most popular areas from the iconic Mount Tabor Park, which is undergoing a massive revitalization nearing completion, to the historic Laurelhurst Park, and Council Crest, the highest point in Portland.
